MDRC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that studies programs and policies that affect people with low incomes and works directly with programs to help improve their effectiveness. MDRC recently launched a portfolio of new studies related to higher education & prison. The higher education & prison team is encouraging scholars connected with this community to apply for opportunities MDRC offers for summer 2026. These opportunities are not exclusive to this community so we want to be sure to know who to look out for in the application review process.
MDRC offering two opportunities in the summer of 2026 for graduate and undergraduate students in its Gueron Scholars Program: (1) doctoral fellowships with stipends for Ph.D. candidates who are pursuing independent, self-directed research on economic and social problems affecting Americans with low incomes and (2) paid undergraduate internships for rising seniors. Applications are open to all interested students.
Doctoral fellowships: Recipients, who will receive a $10,000 stipend, will work on their doctoral dissertations over the eight-week fellowship — and will participate virtually in the intellectual life of MDRC by attending seminars and project meetings and by working with MDRC research staff.
Undergraduate internships: A paid eight-week internship in MDRC’s New York City office for up to two rising seniors who are interested in learning about social or education programs, policies, and research.
