The theme of the SUNY Teaching in Prison Conference is Teaching Inside, Reflecting Within, and Centering Student Success: Why This Work Must Challenge Us All.
This in-person event will offer Higher Education in Prison (HEP) practitioners a unique opportunity to connect and collaborate with others teaching in prisons across New York State, share best practices, and participate in statewide conversations about best supporting students.
As higher education in prison continues to expand, and new institutions and individuals join this growing field, we face a critical moment. We have an opportunity and a responsibility to be intentional about how we show up for our students in prison and commit to practices that are equitable and student-centered. Just as we challenge our students to grow, we must also challenge ourselves and one another to reflect, listen, and act with purpose. With sessions focused on student engagement and support, partnership and relationship building, and pedagogical approaches, this event invites educators, administrators, campus staff, and higher education in prison stakeholders to collaborate on shaping the future of prison education, grounded in the belief that transformation is not just something we foster in others, it’s something we must embody ourselves.
